Your title is incomplete... You left out the " they hate all of you and they think you're stupid" part :)

Thanks for weighing in David! I like your stinky butthole—read essay for context ☺️

I always highlight and listen to the opening of all of your work. Everyone else I subscribe to as well. I understood what you meant in your comment, but when I went back and re-listened to the bottom half of your entry well... I like your stinky butthole too , and I have been using the expressionyabbut as I hurl at my kids and grandkids when they are so sure they are right about something they have no clue what they're talking about, so your use of it here makes us forever friends for all the reasons you will perfectly understand:) given your entry here, you are going to love part 2 of my current project-it will feel as if I specifically wrote it for you.

I think something happened within substack because I was subscribed to you post here but when I went to look at the notice that said you just subscribed it told me to subscribe back so who the hell knows but thank you for subscribing anyway ... You should subscribe to the essential American wisdom newsletter if you are interested as well in the context of this post

Just found you, subscribed immediately because we are fellow travelers trudging the Road to Happy Destiny (iykyk). Congrats on your recovery and I appreciate your service via Hazelden//Betty Ford. I’m 68, working on my 37th year (Oct). Seems we share the stoic outlook as well, “it is what it is”. I look forward to reading your thoughts.

So much synchronicity, Dee. Right before reading this essay, I finished one of my own (coming out in early August) in response to the pervasive, hate-and-fear-driven polemics that seem to have taken over Notes, media, etc.

I mute. I unfollow. I tell the algorithm to “show fewer notes like this.” Doesn’t matter. New, similar posts pop up in their place - spewing more opinions, more polemics, more hate…less heart, less listening, less of anything remotely EFFECTIVE when it comes to changing votes or perspectives!

I don’t belong to either Big Team. And I refuse to engage in the Hate Games.

Hate Games—so appropriate Dana. I look forward to reading your piece. It’s just all so useless and exhausting.

Thank you for adding the wisdom of your heart here. I was told by a sponsor early in my sobriety journey: “anger, hate, resentment are luxuries for other people—not for you.” 🙏

Love this. Arguing with someone about any of this political crap is pointless.

If someone’s substack (or blog, or insta or whatever) has a consistent run of posts about their political choices, I tune out and often mute them. I’m just not going to “feed that wolf”.

I appreciate your honesty, integrity and willingness to call it what it is.

Dude… so good… I like Massey as much as I liked Sessions… maybe Ron Paul… but with this being my 11th presidential election… the unification party, Liar Inc is loaded on all political platforms…

Celebrate with me, August 4th is 2.5 years clean and sober… you are a role model for the sobriety brother!

My best to the dogs and the little woman!

congrats my brother. That is so freakin great. I'm proud of you. For me the first 3 years or so was the toughest--trying to figure out how to live my life sober. It gets better I promise.

Thanks for reading!!!

This is highly offensive: My butthole does NOT stink, and damned you for saying otherwise!

😉

In all seriousness, I've while I've worked hard to keep 'national politics' out of The Stone Age, the assassination attempt on Trump kind of sucked me in momentarily; this serves as a strong reminder to keep it focused in what's "real."

Thank ya kindly, good sir 🫡

Yeah, this was good. Can’t dispute any of it. I was never good at the persuasive speech in school, so trying to say something to someone and convince them probably isn’t going to work with me. I’m more than willing to listen to a thought someone has, they have the right to it, even if it’s wrong, at least in my mind. It’s how they say it that determines if they disappear or stick around. That’s the biggest bug a boo I have. I do think the most important comment you have made here is this -

“But here’s the scariest thing to consider—we’ve chosen them. They are a full-length mirror that we’re standing in front of that reflects back to us our poor decisions.”

Yet, I have to scratch my head. Whether I vote for A or B or not at all, does that one vote, one thought really make that much of a difference ? I’ve gone D, I’ve gone R, I’ve gone none of the above. I’ve probably been more disappointed in the results of the D and I will probably never vote for a Democrat again, mainly in light of the last 5 or 6 years, locally as much as nationally. Get out there and vote !!! I get it, but, honestly, on the small stage it might make a difference if I do or not, but the big enchilada ? I don’t know so much. Maybe those skipped decisions or no selections wound up being not the poorest in the end. I just don’t know.

You’re correct though, shit stinks no matter what form, no matter where it lands.

Thanks Ken. You unpack several parts of it here in your comment. But yeah—does it even count when we do or don’t? I dunno. I know it’s all we have—but it seems lost on those idiots either way.

Hard to imagine that we are so gullible after all these years or maybe just resigned to our state in life. My life really is about 25 miles around where I live. What the government does or doesn’t do will not change me much and definitely won’t change my opinion. Sure there may be policies I don’t like and I write my congressman and senator and get a nice letter from some staff member saying they appreciate me letting them know how I feel as they vote the other way. My dad always told me that opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one and most of them stink, except ours, sometimes I’m not so sure about yours ✌️

Dee, your brilliant honesty is a breath of fresh air. After reading this I simply feel better, thank you.

Why do I feel better?

Because hearing a smart, well-off, experienced guy get real is like taking a huge gulp of air when I thought I was drowning. Also, I laughed out loud numerous times and who doesn’t love that?

I’m certain I’ll remember stinky butt hole for a very long time and it will come in handy!
