Dee, this is one of your best posts imho. Your early morning routine exhausted me just to think about it! However, it’s a good reminder to daily evaluate my inertia status. Thanks for the read!
Dee, you have TrueType captured what many of us 60-something former athletes are feeling like today. I just found “Of a Sober Mind”, and as a former high school teammate of yours, I’m going to subscribe & follow your thoughts & writings. Long live Ultimate memories! Dave
Dee - I loved this piece. The way you pulled in and weaved Newton’s Law with the slowing down and aging process. Such an insight! And Richard Rohr is a gift to us all. I also embrace him wholeheartedly as I “fall upward” in the second half.
Like you, (alcoholic mind here) I also have to maintain a disciplined and ritualistic morning routine so that my mind and body stay friends throughout the day.
Blessings Allison. I appreciate your comments and I’m glad it touched you. OK now...off to begin my Saturday version of the morning routine. We start a little later and more slowly 🤷🏻♂️☺️
Hilarious - 'Today, after decades of running on cinder and rubber tracks, asphalt and pavement, grass and turf fields, and hundreds of miles of Rocky Mountain trails—I’d be hard pressed to run across the backyard for a damn snack. '
Dave Wall connection! No way. Howdy old friend. Good to hear from you. Amazing how the world works. Thank you and stay in touch. I hope you enjoy my weekly rambles. 🙏
Nice meditation, Dee. It reminds me of John Updike's classic essay, "The Disposable Rocket." I think you'll find much to appreciate here. I like how Updike describes the body as betraying us when we're older. I felt that way near the end of today's half marathon while trying to accelerate and being pulled up short by cramps. A sense of humor and some moderation is what that requires.
Can’t believe I hadn’t read that Updike essay before. Well actually I can believe it...I was out doing all of what he refers to a “mechanic’s curiosity.”
Dee, this is outstanding and highly relatable. Thank you for sharing these thoughts with such intimate honesty. Now I'm off to read your linked piece "by God's grace".
This is a brilliant essay Dee! Tying together your athleticism, speed, and spirituality with the laws of physics was both fun to read and allowed us insight into who you are. Well done on captaining your Ultimate team to the National championship, that was great to read about.
You are an awesome example of the wisdom that comes with age, you have changed so much. Slowing down physically but 'speeding up' spiritually and in your growth as a human, I'd say it's an excellent trade off.
I enjoyed your morning routine, may you take comfort in those rituals as you are in the final countdown to yours and Ann's big day❤

Thank you Hilda. It’s the bare minimum in my opinion but I do my best 🤷🏻♂️
LOL, yeah, but your bare minimums always carry a grand punch!
💪🏻😎

As you should! Yes - slowing the pace on the weekend is essential.
Enjoy ☺️

Way to go BTW on the 1/2. Keep moving!

Thanks for reading and sharing Josh!

Thanks Ben. I’m really gratified that you find it relatable. I’m curious how you feel about slowing down as we age?

Aww Donna. The good news about being old and slow at my own wedding is that we can play a longer walk-up song 😉
Thank you dear Donna.
I always appreciate your comments so much. I agree with you--fair trade that I can live well with and love more with 🙏
My body hurts reading about the expectations you have lived through. Relieved for slow and smooth with wisdom topping off an upgraded strategy.🙃
Thanks DuAnne. Self care is primary these days 🙏
