Came to voice-over work late in life; grateful that it helps to support my writing habit. It's not that I love my voice, but I like that I've learned to speak my truth without apology. That goes for day-to-day living and also in the studio. I've recorded books for a few people now, and it's a joy to bring another writer's work to life, an honor and always, a little bit of fun. I enjoy reading your "keepin' it real" style; appreciative for your perspective. When I read you, I hear your voice in my head anyway -- it's just different than the one I'd hear on-air. Write on . . .
Never too late to chase a dream. Maybe there's a class somewhere near you that will offer hands on voice experience and from there, a simple demo to shop to an agent or two. You might also try joining Casting Network -- they offer some freelance and non-union jobs. Big hugs.
Thanks, Stephanie! This interaction inspired me to find a MasterClass that looks promising. Big hugs back your way. I appreciate the info and encouragement.
Great place to begin. And as a writer, you may find yourself bringing other writer's works to life with spoken word recording -- and that's a great joy! I wish you the very best. Please consider me a resource if there's anything I can do to help you, answer questions or be a cheerleader. Big hugs.
I love that you found VO work. I often wonder how I’d feel about it if I hadn’t done it for so long for a living. Thank you for your kind words Stephanie. 🙏
Congratulations on “your sobriety”. Here’s to transitioning to just “your life”.
I’m 15 years this September. No meetings, just enjoying living sober. It’s important to remember that being sober isn’t Ike the movies where you constantly shuffle around from meeting to meeting with all the joy ripped out of your life. Sober means the joy can come back home and stay.
Sgt. Schultz, like Klink, Hochstetter, and Burkhalter. Was played by an escaped Jewish actor who fled pre-war Nazi germany. They all four enjoyed playing the Nazis as idiots.
Klink and Hichstetter were played as straight up committed Nazis, while they agreed that Schultz and Burkhalter were both over it and just wanted the war to end.

The essay can be kind of a fixed thing whereas an audio recording can be more conversational/ ramble a little, allow you to add more detail or anecdotes. Like having a conversation with your audience.
I do that in the comments too but it’s something I’ve been considering for audio recording though I don’t know if I can do spontaneity easily😁 I thought it might be something you may want to try if it is a strength.
I always enjoy reading and mulling over your experiences, and would be interested in hearing them too.

I was wondering that too—maybe bc I love audio so feel compelled to encourage audio. This is both bc I like to listen and for access reasons. A couple of my fav substackers who read their work do a bit of spontaneous intro or outro before and after reading or break in in the middle for explanation or to invite readers into whatever they’re hearing around them (wildlife, household noises, traffic). I try to do this a bit with mine. :)

I have long dreamed of voice-over work. Great to hear about someone else coming to it later in life. Maybe not too late for me! :)
💪🏻🙏

Yes. Exactly one of the reasons i’m drawn to it. Thank you, thank you, Stephanie. Your encouragement is much appreciated.

Hogans heros! How hilarious to copy Sargent Shultz. Love this.
Never heard you on air, never heard you interview anyone, but I enjoy the fresh reality of your writing. Glad you’re here.
Thanks Teyani. Schultz was the best 😉
Clear and smart and wise. Check your email, please.
Thanks Mary!!
I love your authenticity, it’s reflected in your wonderful writing Dee. I’m sure you must be a great speaker. This is an excellent piece! 💜✨👍
Thank you Queen Charlotte🙏

Great to hear from you Scott! I agree 💯 on the joy in sobriety.
I loved Hogans as a kid. Useful and funny!
Love your style
Thank you PP 🙏

I wonder if you could add more spontaneous commentary to a written essay. Would that appeal?
How so Priya? I’m intrigued.
The essay can be kind of a fixed thing whereas an audio recording can be more conversational/ ramble a little, allow you to add more detail or anecdotes. Like having a conversation with your audience.
I try to do that in comments and I haven’t tried Chat yet. Interesting idea though—make the audio recording more conversational than a straight read.
Have you tried that with your own? Sorry if I’ve missed it. Thank you Priya 🙏

Yup. You did love that voice of yours. So did I! And it matched the time. Now I get to love your writing...There you are. Peace brother. Best to Arch.
😎 thanks buddy. He’s improving really well. Moved back into his own home yesterday after 90 days. 🙏
